Nice Easter skiing on beginner groomers with no crowds. The little one graduated off the Magic Carpet to chair lifts.
In other news we finally spent some non-skiing related money at Vail, the $12+ meatball sub is indeed pretty good.

I ate my last PBJ sandwich in the Mid-Gad Restaurant at Snowbird yesterday. It was the last day of operations for that lodge. They are tearing it down and it will take two years to build a replacement. (31 March 2024 was an excellent powder day.)

Earned some turns today by hiking to the top of Jupiter Peak from McConkeys Express (which you can see lower left). Sure, it's work hiking up, but there is just tons of powder up there since so few people choose to do this. Pretty spectacular day. Spring skiing 8,500 feet and below, and it's still mid-February above 9,000 feet.

Until the little one rushed to the potty in the Red Pine Lodge, but couldn't make it, peeing her pants and ending the day. Not sure this has happened to anyone else here who started a little one at 4 years old, but I'm sure it will be a funny story to tell her when she's 16 someday.

Next year starting the granddaughter at three and a half. I'm terrified. Good on you. It will make a great story.

Eclipse produced some weird lighting, and big shadows, but that's about it. Beautiful day though, with perfect conditions and just tons of snow everywhere, especially in the woods. Found what is the hardest terrain I've done at PC so far, which completely caught me by surprise given it's only mid-mountain. A glade area called Deschutes, which was Desreally quite steep, with DesLoveSack sized moguls, and lots of Destrees. Not embarrassed to say I sideslipped some parts.

Powder day #1. Went to SR on the way to a relative’s place at sugarloaf. Snow was definitely denser than the previous snow storm but still fun. Mainly just skied in Jordan and Aurora. Then headed straight for SL

30. Apr. 06, 2024 Sugarloaf
Powder Day #2. Epic day in the woods. Hit just about all the favorites on map and off map. Skidder glade, Brackett, Broccoli, The Office, and Pipecleaner.

Started out as packed powder winter day and finished as a clear spring day. Repeated a handful of glades the day before. Then went for some bumps on Ripsaw, Bubblecuffer, and Winters. One of my favorite things to do this time of year with the longer days is grabbing the last chair on KP and trekking out the saddle and skinning up Burnt to the glades over there. With clear skies you get to take in new perspectives of the mountain. The glades were still untracked although the snow was much heavier with the warm afternoon.

31. Apr. 08, 2024 Sugarloaf Skiclipse
Got about a dozen runs in by noon before meeting up with the crew to plan our spot to view the eclipse. One trip up to the summit and our decision was made. Found a spot behind a snow drift out of the wind and directed at the sun. Well worth it! Never seen so many people on the summit but leaving and skiing down wasn’t too bad. Even got one more bonus run up the SuperQuad before calling it a day. Certainly a ski day we will never forget and lucky for us to get to experience it at our home mountain!

That's a wrap for 23-24. Son has a lacrosse game today and I'd have to pay cash to go somewhere tomorrow and the weather isn't inspiring enough to spend the money. Next weekend it's time to start getting the boat and fishing stuff ready to go for summer.

I don't keep track of days, but I'd guess low 40s. This year was challenging for the weekend warriors in the East. Seems like those with the flexibility to ski midweek had better conditions. Despite the down year for most of New England, it was still a great season for three reasons.

1. Having young kids who are just as passionate about the sport as you are. Children seem much less picky about conditions and always have fun. So if they're having fun, then so am I.

2. Getting into racing three seasons ago. I absolutely love it and because of that, I've learned to love recreational skiing even on boiler plate days. Ripping good carves on really hard snow is a challenge and tremendously fun to try and get better at. And I have. First two seasons I was ranked around 130 out of 425 in my league. This year I jumped up to 63rd. I'm hoping for continued improvement as a late in life entry into the sport. It's fun competing against many guys who were at minimum high level Highschool racers and a couple who were even briefly on the US ski team.

3. We visited a great variety of areas. Several new places for my kids and Owls Head a new one for all of us. Awesome mid sized area and cheap. We / I skied at:

Owl's Head
Jay
Bolton
Mt. Snow
Wildcat
Attitash
Cannon
Loon
Pat's
Gunstock
Sugarloaf
Saddleback
Black Mountain of Maine

Looking forward to 24-25 with hopefully better conditions and continued improvement by my kids and myself.
